Helping your portal community log in to your portal starts by providing your portal’s URL, which can in some cases be a very long string quite difficult to memorize. A very handy way of making your portal address “stick” is to have your users use a custom Internet Explorer button installed on their browser. This method is commonly used by many software providers like Yahoo messenger and MSN Messenger.
Here is a screen shot from our own internal portal implementation. Please notice the Yahoo messenger button on the Internet Explorer toolbar and along-side it our own portal link button. image
The technology
Microsoft IE makes it very easy to add your own button with your own icon. Our implementation includes an icon which you can replace with your own, an application which launches any URL that resides in a “url.txt” file located in the same folder and a registry import file for the Registry keys necessary. Aside from changing the URL and icons you will also need to add a reliable installation program.
