      Hi Yusuf,
      as KM software&systems cover a rather broad topic it is difficult to compare. First of all, the SAP NetWeaver KM component provides a way to bring unstructured content (i.e. documents) to the user’s portal. This includes typically functions like check in / check out, feedback, rating, discussions, full text search, taxonomy creation, etc. on top of the content.
      These functions can also be exposed to ‘3rd party repositories’ if they are connected to to KM (see Debbie’s article or other Blogs in this area).

      In addition to that, one of the key elements in the SAP NetWeaver KM strategy is the ability to integrate KM content, functions and services tightly into your business processes (that for a good deal might be powered by SAP NW itself). Examples for that are the ability to store BW reports as static documents directly in KM (and being able to use some of the functions mentioned above on top of them) or the possibility to link up CRM and KM.
      So, in a nutshell: NW KM is not only a system for managing unstructured content but also for bringing this content to the users in their current context (e.g. the business process they are currently working in) in the homogeneous user interface of the portal. This will also be one of the KM development areas as SAP NetWeaver is evolving (today, these integration capabilities are only addressed in single scenarios like the BW expample above).

    One of the terms that seems to have different meanings in various KM / CM products is “taxonomy”.  While generally defined as “a hierarchial classification of content into an ordered system that identifies natural relationships”, the term can be used in multiple ways.  For example, some vendors consider taxonomy as the folder structure used to store documents, some consider taxonomy to be the metadata (or properties) assigned to content upon check-in, and some consider the taxonomy to be the search indexes used for accessing content. What is SAP’s view of taxonomy and where can we find SAP best practices for creating / updating a taxonomy within a heterogeneous KM environment?

      Hi Eric,
      let’s get some definitions straight first, so we can then go on to see the differences in SAP’s view on “taxonomy”:
      1) You quote the original home of txonomy and taxonomic classification: the Life Sciences. Where a taxonomy is “a hierarchial classification of content into an ordered system that identifies natural relationships”. This includes the fact that each individual living thing can always only belong to one realm, phyllum, class, order, family, species…
      2) Even a conventional file server is strictly speaking a “virtual navigation” as the bits and bytes of files are not really structured accordingly on the drive. This becomes evident when defragmenting a disk and switching on visualization…

      SAP’s view of taxonomy:
      “A virtual navigation hierarchy that can be filled with objects by automatic classification processes.”

      In relation to 1):
      One navigation node in a taxonomy can always only belong to one higher level node. But one document object can automatically be classified into several nodes (thus, leaving the strictly scientific concept of taxonomies).

      In relation to 2):
      SAP KM defines the hierarchy of the file server or database where KM objects are physically stored as the “physical structure”. Taxonomies are overlying “virtual structures” that contain but links to the objects.

      Automatic classification is the process to help you fill these virtual hierarchies.
      And the purpose?
      Is to provide role-based approaches to navigation, to logically merge physically disparate repositories, etc.

        I am loading a TREX taxonomy using EP6 Query Based Classification.  In some cases, the URL contains information that would help classify documents.

        For example the URL:


        Would tell me that this fits into the taxonomy in the “Products” area under both the “adhesives” and “sealants” sub-classifications.

        Is the string of the URL available to the Portal (EP6 SP2) classification for a “contains” type Query Based Classification?  i.e.

           if     URL contains “products”
           and    URL contains “adhesives”

        I also have similar questions for HTML MetaTags and MS Office Document properties.  How do I access them during taxonomy classification?
