November 2021:

For the updated maintenance strategy for the BPC product suite, please see https://blogs.sap.com/2021/11/26/sap-business-planning-and-consolidation-sap-bpc-strategy/

SAP follows a cloud first strategy for planning. This explicitly does not mean cloud only. Many companies still require an on premise or hosted solution due to regulatory requirements, corporate policy, or customization beyond the scope of a public cloud solution. For these customers we have the industry leading SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (SAP BPC) as key part of our Analytics portfolio. SAP BPC provides thousands of customers with the ability to streamline planning, forecasting, consolidation and reporting processes in one environment. We have a solid workforce addressing the needs of the SAP BPC product family. At the same time our innovation focus is on SAP Analytics Cloud planning. We recommend extending your existing BPC solutions by SAP Analytics Cloud for more end-user and LOB focus. For this we are plased to offer a tailored EXTEND program. As base of the program we outline and summariye below the maintenance situation of BPC.

SAP BPC has been available for many years and maintenance is an important topic for existing customers . The overall maintenance strategy of SAP also applies to SAP BPC. It includes mainstream maintenance, priority-one-maintenance and customer specific maintenance. The different strategies for the different SAP BPC products can be found here and in note 52505.

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, version for SAP BW/4HANA

This product delivers planning and consolidation capabilities on SAP BW/4HANA. This comprises the ‘standard model’ and the ‘embedded model’, just like in SAP BPC NW. However, BPC ‘optimized’ is not available since this product can not operate on SAP S/4HANA but only on the data warehouse SAP BW/4HANA and strictly follows its release strategy. Accordingly, SAP BPC 11.0 was delivered in 2017 following SAP BW/4HANA 1.0. SAP BPC 11.1 followed in 2019 with the release of SAP BW/4HANA 2.0. SAP BPC will continue to be compatible with future releases of SAP BW/4HANA. Continuous innovation will be driven by integration into SAP Analytics Cloud, Analysis for Office and enhancements by concrete customer demand. Maintenance follows the strategy of SAP BW/4HANA with five (5) years of mainstream maintenance for SAP BW/4HANA 2.0 and follow-up releases, see here.

Release to customer (RTC) End of Mainstream Maintenance Comment
BPC 11.0 20.06.2017 31.12.2021

Maintenance was extended twice to allow enough time upgrading to BW/4HANA 2.0. No more extension expected since by 2021 all customers shall be on BW/4HANA 2.0.

Customer-specific maintenance possible after end of mainstream maintenance
BPC 11.1 20.05.2019 31.12.2024

BPC 11.1 follows BW/4HANA 2.0 which ends-maintenance 31.12.2024.

The product maintenance will be available until 2027, either by extending BPC 11.1 or a successor product version.

Customer-specific maintenance possible after end of mainstream maintenance.

(These dates are valid as of April 2020. The official and up-to-date dates can be found here)

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, version for SAP NetWeaver

This product delivers planning and consolidation capabilities on NetWeaver. This comprises the ‘standard model’ and the ‘embedded model’. It can run on SAP Business Warehouse or embedded into SAP S/4HANA on-premise.   ’BPC optimized’ is a ‘BPC embedded’ model running embedded into and operating directly on the data of SAP S/4HANA.
SAP BPC NW will continue to be compatible with future NetWeaver releases. Continuous innovation will be driven by integration into SAP Analytics Cloud, Analysis for Office and enhancements by concrete customer demand.

SAP BPC NW used to be part of the former SAP Enterprise Performance Management product suite, which used to be part of the SAP Business Objects product portfolio. Hence its maintenance follows a BPC-specific strategy which is loosely coupled timewise with the SAP BPC version for the Microsoft Platform, which follows the SAP Business Objects support strategy. Custom-specific maintenance is possible, though priority-one-support will not be available

Release to customer (RTC) End of Mainstream Maintenance Comment
BPC NW 10.0 10.05.2011 31.12.2020

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation, version for the Microsoft

This product line delivers planning and consolidation capabilities on the Microsoft technology stack based on the acquisition of the OutlookSoft solution. Maintenance follows the general strategy of Business Objects which is seven (7) years of mainstream maintenance and the option of two (2) years of priority-one support, while for SAP BPC MS we don't offer priority-one support as was communicated here.

General direction and recommendation for concrete considerations on your planning strategy

In closing, we encourage customers to consider the following options for enterprise planning:

Customers should consider SAP Business Planning & Consolidation 11.1, version for SAP BW/4HANA for any or all the following reasons:

  • Unified planning AND consolidation (one solution to still do both)

  • On-premise deployment (though available for hosting easily with various hosting providers)

  • Have a data warehouse-based strategy (majority of planning data stored in SAP BW/4HANA)

  • Customer Scenarios not currently available in SAP Analytics Cloud at present

Customers should consider SAP Business Planning & Consolidation 10.1, version for NetWeaver for the above reasons in case the data-warehouse they leverage is embedded into SAP S/4HANA on-premise.

Customers should consider SAP Analytics Cloud for any or all the following reasons:

  • Planning-only requirements (no legal consolidations, but management reporting available)

  • Cloud-first strategy

  • Collaborative enterprise planning (integration with various SAP and non-SAP data sources) for a holistic view of the business

  • Integration with SAP S/4HANA for seamless data and master data integration
