When I started writing this blog I was thinking about the Ch-Ch-Changes that SAP Services is going through (for the better) as we move to SCN. So I invited good friend David Bowie to help me celebrate.

I develop software for a living and recently I was forced to think about the nature of mobile applications. You see, I live in the San Francisco Bay area. As most people around here, I am used to my iPhone being on-line all the time and I’m dependent on it for everything. Want to eat? Check Yelp for a nearby restaurant. Want to find an address? Maps with GPS are right here. Want to send an email? Check something on Wikipedia? Order a book from Amazon on the spot? Here you go. We do not pay attention to it, we just live it. (more…)

Asset retirement obligations … hmmm …. what’s that?  Sounds like you’re cashing in your retirement fund, packing up your desk and moving to Florida.  Well, in the world of business accounting and finance, asset retirement is an important accounting requirement; especially for companies that are in industries like utilities, telecommunications and retail. It’s for those industries that have physical assets that will wear out over time or need to be removed at a specific point.  In these cases, assets include equipment, buildings and land – not your retirement fund!  (more…)

Most companies are in a continuous battle to get away from the spaghetti chart of interfaces between various systems – but for many companies, it’s still a reality.

Do you recognize your company in this statement? 

If you do, then you also know that monitoring these interfaces can be both complicated and time consuming.  In most cases, the IT staff monitors the interface, but if an error occurs, they need input from the business staff.  And let’s face it; communications between the two groups is not always optimal. So I’ve been thinking lately about how organizations find their way out of huge volumes of data.  I guess the techies have figured out how to make data from the past understandable with all their whiz-bang data warehousing tricks, but we all know that is like driving forward while watching out the proverbial rear view window. How on earth do leaders make fact-based decisions that help improve their businesses going forward?  In essence, how do they predict the future?
