According to a survey conducted by Piper Jaffray, two out of three customers expect their next mobile phone to be an iPhone 5.
It’s still unclear when exactly the iPhone 5 will hit the market. What is clear: the significance of the new iPhone for Apple’s business cannot be overstated. Those in Cupertino have even more reason to celebrate, thanks to the study conducted by analysts from Piper Jaffray. It shows that Apple not only has the most loyal customers, but also forecasts the sale of nearly 80 million iPhones in the coming year. That would account for half of the smartphone sales that Piper Jaffray is estimating for 2013.
Windows 8 relegated to “other”
For the study, 400 customers in the USA and Asia were surveyed, representing a mixture of Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone users. 65 percent of the total respondents reported that their next smartphone will be an iPhone. The second-largest share, 19 percent, will buy an Android-based device, and only 2.5 percent plan to buy a BlackBerry.
Of the participants who already own an iPhone, nearly all say they would purchase the next iPhone: 94.2 percent. Among current Android customers, only 60 percent would choose another Android-based device as their next smartphone. Although it’s an improvement over the 47 percent response from last year, Android is still losing a third of its customers to the iPhone. The same is true for RIM: 38 percent of current customers would swap their BlackBerry for an iPhone.
Will iPhone 5 sales be the stuff of legend? We’ll have to wait for the earnings report to come out before we know exactly. In a record-breaking quarter, Apple sold 37 million iPhones, making up more than half of Apple’s revenues in Q1 2012.
