The Face of Big Data: You

We can no more ignore Big Data than we can ignore ourselves. All of us – as Internet users, e-mailers, picture-takers, bloggers, and blog readers – are adding to the billions of gigabytes of information already out there.

According to “The Human Face of Big Data” by Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt, collectively we’ve created an entire universe of data. “There are almost as many bits of information in the digital universe as there are stars in our actual universe.”

Think of it another way. Ever heard of a septillion? It’s 10 to the 24th power. Or 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That’s the number of stars in our universe. And nearly the amount of data that we humans have created in the digital age.

And we’re nowhere close to being done.

Big Data isn’t going away. It’s going to keep multiplying. It’s going to keep coming from new and unlikely places. So the question is how can you make it work for your business? How can you turn unimaginable volume into unimaginable opportunity?

Data is the new oil

Data is the next big economic asset. It’s the fuel for the digital age.big data face

According to the “The Human Face of Data,”  it’s easy to see the growing value of data:

  • Every hour we create enough Internet traffic to fill 7 billion DVDs. Side by side, that’s 7 times the height of Mount Everest.
  • 247 billion e-mails are sent every day, with up to 80% being spam.
  • 80% of all humans own a mobile phone of some sort. Out of 5 billion mobiles\ devices, 1 billion are smartphones.

And that’s just the consumer story of data. Think about what businesses are creating. Think about the data that you create and interact with from 9 to 5.

Making fast use of Big Data

With in-memory computing, Big Data can actually become useful data. Instead of the headaches of merging data sources, dealing with bad business intelligence, and endlessly reconciling reports, you can get a real-time look at operations. All without relying on IT to provide it ad hoc.
