In the baseball-as-metaphor classic Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner famously hears a wise, disembodied voice issue the advice “If you build it, they will come.” Call it the power of suggestion (spoiler alert): He does, and they do.
The same could be said of mobile BI.
According to research done by Aberdeen Group, business intelligence (BI) usage among organizations with mobile BI has doubled compared to those companies who have not mobilized BI. It seems that broad dissemination of knowledge has become a key differentiator for companies leading the pack in BI use.
Among Aberdeen Group’s best-in-class firms, three-quarters are disseminating dashboards to managers, and more than half are delivering BI directly to customer-facing staff. That’s almost twice the rate of other companies.
It’s also interesting to note that among the respondents to an Aberdeen Group survey, over half said that their primary business driver for adopting mobile BI is the belief that doing so would give them a competitive edge. There’s that power of suggestion again.
But there are some solid numbers to back up the belief. The research found that best-in-class firms were able to find information required for critical business decisions 87 percent of the time. And a whopping 92 percent of customers reported being extremely or very satisfied with those firms.
Compare that to the industry averages of 55 percent and 62 percent, respectively. When it comes to mobile BI, a core finding of the study asserts that it’s a significant accelerator of time-to-information, achieving a rate of just 3.8 hours to decision – 70 percent faster than the industry average.
So what are these best-in-class companies doing to get numbers like this? Well first, they’ve got an executive-level commitment to provide timely information on critical decision making data to front-line employees. They take security for mobile BI and corporate data seriously. And they use a variety of mobile BI deployment methods. - Managers using mobile BI are fully involved in implementation
- Management and security policies exist for all mobile devices
- Mobile BI is part of an integrated business intelligence strategy
- Users can get a 360-degree view of customer information
- BI reports and dashboards can be role-specific
- Information access time can be measured on mobile devices
